Runway Trends: London & New York, Spring 2009

Parrots met the polka dots and papaya-color just become another shiny metallic shade this Spring and you may live up the 80s once again if your short suits and shoulder pads reflect the return of the decade. So, before things start getting burning hot in Paris and Milan, let’s touch a few cr?me-de-la-cr?me of the fashion world at New York.

The message was heralded in 2008 when speculations were on for figure-hugging jumpsuits in fun colors and with girly frills to create statements the following year; 2009 saw quite a bit of that transforming to reality, joined by architecturally-sculpted dresses, military-styled coats and tunics and biker jacket in heavy, jazzy prints; the prints also showed up in long and lean dresses and short suits alike, in metallic shades and adorned in sequins.

A new twist in old favorites (floral prints, embroidered garments) showcased ravishing colors in dresses and kimono jackets with kingfisher blue being the most attractive of them all, while huge polka dots and similar circular designs gave the tropical fruits and citrus lemon a preference over other colors in the wallowing trench-coats, tops and trouser suits. However, London seemed to be more sympathetic over pistachio-colored fabrics shunning black away from the public eye. So fashion just turned lime ‘n lemony in the new season (pun intended), with a whole new range of accessories complementing the new trends.
Scarves rule the roost in this aspect; Paul Smith’s soft and drapey, pirate-styled silk scarf belts are imparting that relaxed feel in jumpsuits with slouchy, high-waist trousers joining the list. Some are even pairing them up with the kimono-style dresses to make room for the bug’s-eye sunglasses. Such eccentric inputs are bringing in a playful mood to the whole idea of serious fashion and it seems the look is going to catch the fashion trends of the future.
